Avoiding Scholastic Dishonesty

Scholastic dishonesty includes plagiarism, cheating, unauthorized collaboration, fabricating information and obtaining grades or honors dishonestly.

Avoiding Scholastic Dishonesty

Here are a few suggestions to help avoid scholastic dishonesty:

  • Read your syllabus. Your syllabus will include information about course expectations, including scholastic dishonesty.
  • Talk to your instructor. If you have questions about an assignment, ask them directly.
  • Review frequently asked questions about using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in your classes.
  • Plan ahead. Leave yourself plenty of time to study for exams and write papers. If you need an extension on a due date, request one from your instructor.
  • Use University resources, such as Student Writing Support and Tutoring and Academic Success Center, that can help you understand how to use citations and develop effective study habits.
  • Beware of “tutoring" websites that claim to help you with your classes. Many students end up using material from these sites that they submit as their own, and they are then held accountable for cheating.
