What kind of consequences could I face?

If a student is found responsible for violating the Board of Regents Student Conduct Code they are subject to consequences which the student conduct code refers to as sanctions

Determining Sanctions

Sanctions are determined based on a range of factors including, what the student did, who it affected and how the student can best learn from the experience.

If an informal meeting between an OCS staff member and the student is required, possible sanctions will be discussed at that meeting. If a meeting is not required, sanctions will be outlined in an email that is sent to the student.

If a student disagrees with the sanctions offered, the disciplinary process allows an opportunity for a student to request further review. 

Student Development

Our office takes a developmental approach to working with students and determining sanctions. This approach encourages students to develop skills and characteristics for success at the University and beyond.

Safety of the Community

The University seeks a community that is free from violence, threats and intimidation. If misconduct threatens the safety and well being of the community, separation from the University through suspension or expulsion may be applied.

Below is a list of sanctions that can be assigned to students if they are found responsible for a violation of the Board of Regents Student Conduct Code:

Academic Sanction

An academic sanction means a sanction affecting the course or academic work of the student for violation of Section VI, Disciplinary Offenses, Subdivision 1, Scholastic Dishonesty

Warning

A warning means the issuance of an oral or written warning or reprimand.

Disciplinary Probation

Probation means special status with conditions imposed for a defined period of time and includes the probability of more severe disciplinary sanctions if the student is found to violate any institutional regulation during the probationary period.

Required Compliance

Required compliance means satisfying University requirements, work assignments, community service, or other discretionary assignments.

Confiscation

Confiscation means confiscation of goods used or possessed in violation of University regulations or confiscation of falsified identification or identification wrongly used.

Restitution

Restitution means making compensation for loss, injury, or damage.

Restriction of Privileges

Restriction of privileges means the denial or restriction of specified privileges, including, but not limited to, access to an official transcript for a defined period of time.

University Housing Suspension

University housing suspension means separation of the student from University Housing for a defined period of time.

University Housing Expulsion

University housing expulsion means permanent separation of the student from University Housing.

Suspension

Suspension means separation of the student from the University for a defined period of time, after which the student is eligible to return to the University. Suspension may include conditions for readmission.

Expulsion

Expulsion means the permanent separation of the student from the University.

Withholding of Diploma or Degree

Withholding of diploma or degree means the withholding of diploma or degree otherwise earned for a defined period of time or until the completion of assigned sanctions.

Revocation of Admission or Degree

Revocation of admission or degree means revoking a student’s admission to the University or revoking a degree already awarded by the University.
